I studied fine art (Printmaking) at University of Wales, institute, Cardiff, and completed a BA (Hons) degree in 2000. In 2004 i received an MA in Ceramics from the same university.
Born and bred in Skipton, The inspiration for my work has always come from the Dales and the scenes of farming life that surround us. I aim to recreate the moody skies, amazing landscapes, and loveable characters of Yorkshire. My style is to distil the scenes to their simplest forms, and the resulting work is both bold and contemporary.
I start with many hours of observation, backed up with sketches and photographs. These ideas are later adapted and developed into an image to be scratched onto my printmaking plate. After printing this image to create the bold black outlines in my work, the plate is then inked up again, possibly two or three times, with carefully mixed transparent layers of colour. Various wiping techniques are used on each layer to give depth and texture to my work.
I have experimented a lot in the field of printmaking, and developed this method, which is a mix of drypoint and monoprint techniques. Each piece i produce is an individual and unique work of art.
